In and around Hiroshima Castle were a number of military facilities, including the partially underground air defence room of the Chigoku Regional Military Headquarters, which was located 700 metres from the hypo centre of the atomic bomb. During the final stages of World War II, soldiers were assisted by Hijiyama Girls’ High School students mobilised for the effort.
The atomic bomb destroyed telephone and telegraph lines but the students, using the barely intact military phone system, managed to relay the news of Hiroshima’s destruction. Their seems to have been the first report of the attack.
