Española Mockingbird

This mockingbird is endemic to the island of Española in the Galápagos and is slightly larger than other species found in the archipelago. It is the only carnivorous mockingbird species, feeding on a variety of insects, turtle hatchlings, sea lion placentas and even baby boobies. With no source of fresh water on the island, these mockingbirds dig holes in the sand and drink sea lion urine to hydrate themselves but are quick to recognise bottles of fresh water.
