Great comprehensive guide to ‘Exploring the Outer Hebrides in a Camper Van’. I’m Scottish and I love the west highlands but I’ve never made it out to the Outer Hebrides. I did tour the highlands in a camper van though (my friend’s 1985 Winnebago Lesharo) – in 2011. I’ve lived/worked/traveled in many different parts of the world, and that camper holiday in my home country was one of the best holidays I have ever had. Unusually for Scotland, we were blessed with glorious sunshine for 8 out of the 10 days that we were on the road. I’m actually in the process of putting a post together about the trip. Anyway, good read. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Raymond! We would love to travel around the highlands in a camper van too – it is on the ever-growing bucket list! We were also very lucky with the weather during our week-long trip. Seems Scottish weather can cooperate sometimes after all! Will look forward to reading your highlands post, I’m sure it will inspire us to continue exploring Scotland!

A fantastic guide absolutely packed with information that is super useful! I backpacked around Scotland and public transport isn’t always the best so a camper van is perfect, especially as there is so much to see and do. Thank you for providing us with this one-stop-guide. #feetdotravel

Glad you enjoyed it. We would definitely recommend using a camper van to travel around the Outer Hebrides, it was our first camper-experience and we loved it!

The Calanais Standing Stones are amazing, I can’t believe I’ve never heard of them. Your photograph makes them look better than Stone Henge, I can imagine there are less tourists too.

Thanks! We actually haven’t been to Stone Henge yet (although it is on our list), so can’t compare but the Calanais Stones are spectacular! As you said, there were only a few tourists when we went too, which helped the photo-taking!

Thanks Stephanie! Renting a van is definitely the best way to see the islands. A lot of people were cycling and camping, which also looked amazing but we didn’t have enough time to give that a go. The Calanais Stones are spectacular and apparently the best time to see them is at sunrise!

Thanks for an in-depth tour and detailed guide through this area. I would love to visit. I think your right , the key is not to rush and have plenty of time to take it all in and see all the off the beaten path places. Looks like I good do some good hiking too!

Glad you enjoyed it Lisa – we didn’t think there would be so much to see there! There are some wonderful hiking routes and if we had more time there we would definitely have done more hiking, as the weather was wonderful while we were there.

Hebrides seems to be a perfect campsite in Scotland for the people who respect nature and loves adventure. A wonderful place to commune with nature and get lost in its beauty.
