Grey Heron

The grey heron is widely distributed across Europe, Asia and much of Africa. In the Seychelles’ granitic islands it was initially valued as a food source and was reportedly driven to extinction in the central archipelago in the 1960s. In the early 1980s some birds began to appear around Victoria and breeding was once again recorded in the late 1980s. The population rapidly expanded from that time with an estimate of over 50 pairs of these birds on the island in 2007.
