The little egret is a species of small heron. The adult is approximately 55 to 65 centimetres (21 to 25.5 inches) long with a wingspan of 88 to 106 centimetres (34 to 42 inches). In the breeding season the adult has two long nape plumes and red between the bill and the eyes. The species has a wide range and little egrets are generally seen singly or in small, loose groups. The birds frequent a wide variety of open wetlands with fresh, brackish or salt shallow water.
