Uig is a remote region of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides and an area of great natural beauty. The area takes its name from the norse word for ‘bay’ and sits around an inlet on the west coast. The landscape in this area is hillier and more dramatic than elsewhere on the island with its combination of myriad islets, wild cliffs and pristine beaches.
Uig beach is famous for being the site where the Lewis Chessmen were found in 1831. It is one of the largest beach areas on the island and has a campsite.
Today Uig seems pretty isolated, however there is lots of evidence of past occupation. An Iron Age broch at Loch ne Berie may have been of similar proportions to Dun Carloway and was preserved under windblown sand and accumulated peat.
