St. Peter’s By The Sea Catholic Church in Kailua-Kona was built in 1880 in La’aloa Bay, (meaning sacred bay) on the site of an ancient Hawaiian heiau (temple). In 1912 the church was placed on poles and carried by hand and dragged by donkey to its current position at the north end of Kahalu’u Beach.
Known as the ‘little blue church’, it has only 12 pews and was made of clapboard with a corrugated tin roof. It is now a very popular wedding venue.
