Mexico has so much to offer as a destination for a family holiday.
Whether you would like an easy resort style vacation or a busy trip with lots of adventures for the kids, Mexico has something for everyone. Not only will the family return home with lots of great memories, Mexico’s vibrant culture as well as its ancient architecture will also inspire the imagination of minds both young and old.
Cancún
One of the most popular resort towns in the country, Cancún is located in south-eastern Mexico and is known as the Mexican Caribbean. It boasts beautiful beaches and plenty of outdoor fun for the kids. Sailing, kayaking, diving and snorkelling are just a few water-based activities that the whole family can enjoy. Or see the most beautiful cenotes Cancun has to offer. For those who would rather observe marine life from above water, a tour on a glass-bottom boat will also prove exciting.
Evidence of pre-Columbian Maya civilization can also be found in Cancún. El Rey is a small archaeological site conveniently located in the hotel zone and is perfect for a family visit.
Other popular experiences in Cancún include jeep safari tours, eco-archaeological parks, visiting local markets and even cooking classes.
Mexico City
Another great family holiday destination, Mexico City is rich in art, culture and history. Parque Mexico in the area of Condesa offers space for children to roam free, and is well maintained with plenty of fountains, ponds, waterfalls as well as many exotic tree varieties.
Adults on the other hand, can relax and admire the murals that can be found in many public places around the city. Famous works include those by artists such as Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco and Hector Cruz Garcia.
For a whole afternoon of fun with the kids, Chapultepec zoo is the perfect place to be. Admission to the zoo is free, and it is home to many animal species native to Mexico.
The Zocalo is a huge open plaza and a big social meeting place, with plenty of street vendors and performers to entertain the entire family. This is a fantastic spot to observe local life and watch traditional street performances.
Tulúm
For somewhere a little different that will really spark the imagination of a young mind, a visit to Tulúm is a must. Tulúm is an ancient Mayan fortress city and it is the only archaeological site to be built overlooking the ocean. The kids can combine learning about these ruins with a dip in the sea – a perfect combination to ensure their minds are filled but their energy is spent! Other things to do include turtle watching and jungle tours.
Cuernavaca
Known as the City of Eternal Spring, the temperature of this small city remains at a pleasant 21C all year around. As it is only 85km from Mexico City, visitors to the capital can easily add a short stay in Cuernavaca on their itinerary.
Since Cuernavaca boasts diverse landscapes including mountains, volcanoes, meadows and rivers, outdoor adventures are incredibly popular pursuits in the area. Hiking, golfing, kayaking, camping, cycling and mountain biking are just some possibilities.
