Sagres’ fishing harbour, Porto do Baleeira, is said to be one of the best places in the world to buy fresh fish and seafood. A fish auction (lota de baleeira) is held daily in the building above the docks and attracts dealers and restauranteurs from all over the Algarve.
The traditional port is nestled in a sheltered bay approximately two kilometres (1.2 miles) from the town centre. It harbours dozens of typical fishing boats, which supply the local market. Throughout the day visitors can watch local fishermen returning to the harbour to unload their cargos.
Today, some companies also provide activities such as diving, fishing and boating from the harbour.
