The top 5 things to do in Sardinia – and not a beach in sight.

Sardinia is most known for its white sandy beaches and electric blue waters. But this beautiful Mediterranean island offers more than just a place to lie on your back and work on your tan.

So put your shoes on, grab a bottle of water and let’s see what else is on the island!

Grotta di Ispinigoli

Enjoy a break from the searing heat and walk down 280 steps in this spectacular cave which has the second largest stalagmite in the world – making this a must see. This has taken over 400,000 years to grow. It continues to grow too at 1cm per century.

Take the 30 minute guided tour to learn more about Grotta di Ispinigoli.

The Ruins of Nora

See where Sardinia began – it’s suggested Nora was the first town on the island. The ancient roman town is still steeped in mystery. During the summer, what remains of the theatre is still used for concerts to this very day. Make the extra effort of climbing to the top of the tower and you’ll be rewarded with jaw dropping views.

The ruins of Nora also run deep underwater as the island continues to be submerged slowly over time. Snorkel to explore more while seasoned scuba divers can get even closer to the ruins.

Cathedrals

Those who love to marvel in and outside of cathedrals are in luck: Sardinia has not one but four beautiful cathedrals.

The most interesting is Cagliari cathedral. This 13th century cathedral has intricate marble work while the crypt holds royal tombs. Feel a sense of calm wash over you as the cathedral overlooks the Cagliari waterfront.

Tirso Wine Tour

Sardinian wines are unique; they have very little in common to the rest of Italy’s wines. The island’s mix of culture and influences have impacted it’s taste and flavour which is more akin to Spanish wine than Italian.

Take a wine tour of Tirso and decide for yourself.

Parco Nazionale dell’Arcipelago di La Maddalena

The stunning landscape of Sardinia lends itself to having a fantastic National Park.

The fresh smell of the forest will make you forget all about the beaches. Stretch your legs and take a hike. Try your luck with some dolphin spotting (you’ll also find mineral museum, the dolphin research centre and the museum of the sea). Or find a quiet hideaway with one of the many coves situate0d along the coast.

With ferries to Sardinia it’s super easy to reach for a day trip – although you’ll probably want to stay for longer.
